What is a Disc Herniation?

A vertebral segment consists of three parts as follows: the upper and lower vertebrae and the disc between them. The blood vessels at the posterior outer part of the disc are obliterated prematurely during the antenatal period. Therefore, this region of the disc sheath is weak, and herniations generally occur at these sites. With the rupture of the disc sheath, the gel-like substance within the disc comes out, compresses the nerve root, and the patient encounters pain and loss of strength.

What is the treatment of a disc herniation?

If the disc  herniation has not caused any loss of strength, surgery is not indicated. If the patient’s  pain cannot be relieved by medications and no strength loss has occurred, transforaminal steroid treatment is another alternative treatment method performed under the operation room conditions. The golden standard in disc herniation surgery is microscopic microdiscectomy, popularly named laser surgery. You may consult to decide on which treatment will be appropriate for which disc herniation.
