What is Deformity Correction?

The cause of a deformity formation may be either a post-fracture malunion or congenital. The deformity should be well-analyzed before the operation, and operative planning should be done in that context. If shortness is present, the two problems can be corrected simultaneously.

Which methods are used for deformity correction?

Depending on the deformity’s site and severity, gradual corrections may be made using a computer-assisted circular external fixator. This system’s advantage is that it allows you to make new arrangements by adjusting the system during the correction process. Another method is the acute correction method. In this method, the fixation method used in the bone may either be a plate-screw combination or an intramedullary nail. You need to decide which fixation method you will use depending on the deformity’s location and severity.

Diğer bir yöntem akut olarak düzeltme yöntemidir. Bu yöntemde kemiğe uygulanılan tespit yöntemi plak-vida kombinasyonu olabileceği gibi bir intramedüller çivi de olabilir.

Osteotomies Around the Knee (High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO) and Distal Femoral Osteotomy (DFO)

The knee joint is slightly inclined inward in a normal individual. We call this condition genu varus. Sometimes, this varus angle is high, and abnormal load is placed on the knee’s inner side, causing early arthrosis. This condition should be corrected, particularly in young patients. Otherwise, they start to encounter knee joint problems at an earlier period.

So, how is this operation performed, which methods are used?

A deformity analysis is made before surgery, and how much deviation from normal is present in which bone is determined. Then, this abnormal deviation is corrected by making an osteotomy on the bone. This correction may be performed either acutely with plate-screw or intramedullary nail or gradually with a computer-assisted circular external fixator. We decide which method will be appropriate for which patient on the patient’s behalf, in private. You may consult which type of surgical treatment is necessary.
